3.118 Verbs which consist of two parts: compound verbs

There are a number of verbs such as 'cross-examine' and 'test-drive' which consist of two words. They are sometimes called compound verbs.

• He would have been cross-examined on any evidence he gave.
• Take the baby along if you can't find anyone to baby-sit.
• It is not wise to hitch-hike on your own.
