1.165 'the' with a noun

You can use a noun group consisting just of 'the' and a noun when you are referring to a specific person or thing, or to a specific group of people or things, and you know that the person you are talking or writing to will understand which person, thing, or group you are referring to.

• The expedition sailed out into the Pacific.
• We are going to miss you in the university.
• He stopped the car in front of the bakery.
