M:Hello, Mrs. Wallis. My name's Dr Trelawney. Come in and sit down. I have a letter here from your family doctor but I'd like to ask you a few questions as well. How old are you?
W:I'm 35 years old.
M:What's your occupation?
W:I'm a shop assistant.
M:What problems are you having at the moment?
W:My right hip is sore and I'm having difficulty walking.
M:How long have you had these problems?
W:I've had them for many years.
M:How did they begin? Was it sudden or gradual?
W:I've really had the problems for as long as I can remember, but they've been getting gradually worse over many years.
M:Do you remember an accident at the start of your troubles?
W:No, the problems seemed to develop for no reason.
M:What are you prevented from doing by your sore hip at the moment?
W:I'm able to do very little. I struggle to walk just a few hundred metres.
M:Where is your pain?
W:It's mainly my left hip, but my right knee is also slightly sore.
M:When do you get the pain?
W:I have the pain most of the time but it gets worse towards the end of the day, especially if I've been on my feet all day.
M:Do you limp?
W:Yes, I limp very badly.
M:Do you need to use a stick or crutches to get around?
W:Yes, I have a walking stick which I hold in my left hand.
M:Do you find it's getting harder to get around?
W:Oh, yes, certainly.
M:Does your hip cause you any other problems?
W:Yes, it's so stiff that I can't bend over to tie my shoe laces.
M:Do any problems run in the family?
W:Yes, my mother also had a stiff hip and she had a limp. She needed an operation when she was only forty to give her a new hip.
