Acknowledgments and Transitions
We will begin our expressions of appreciation by acknowledging those mentors and leaders in psychiatry who supported our original vision for crafting the first two textbooks published by American Psychiatric Press, Inc. (APPI).
As assistant professors, one of us (SCY) served as the section editor for a 7-chapter section on "Neuropsychiatry," which appeared in Volume 4 of the American Psychiatric Association's Annual Review of Psychiatry that was published in 1985 and that was edited by REH. Because the section was so well received by students, practitioners, and in published reviews and because we believed that there was much more that required covering in the reemerging field of neuropsychiatry, we proposed expanding the section into a multiauthored textbook, which we would edit and write chapters. Melvin Sabshin, M.D., Shevert Frazier, M.D., Ethel Person, M.D., Carol Nadelson, M.D., Ron McMillan, and John Talbott, M.D., were especially supportive of this bold and somewhat controversial idea from two relatively young upstarts. Comprising about 500 pages and 25 chapters, the First Edition of The American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Neuropsychiatry was published in 1987 and became an immediate best seller, nationally and internationally.
Even before the publication of the Textbook of Neuropsychiatry, we submitted another bold proposal for an APPI textbook of psychiatry, and invited our dear friend and mentor John Talbott, M.D., then President of the American Psychiatric Association, to join us as an editor. Once more, our proposal was approved, and the First Edition of The American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Psychiatry was published in 1988. It comprised about 1,300 pages and 38 chapters.
We have collaborated for nearly 30 years on six editions of the Textbook of Psychiatry, five editions of the Textbook of Neuropsychiatry, six textbook study guides, six Essentials versions of the textbooks, and one manual, for a total of 24 books.
We are now putting in place the editorial leadership of future editions. We are grateful and honored that Laura Roberts, M.D., has joined us as a co-editor of this Sixth Edition of The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry and that David Arciniegas will be a co-editor of the Sixth Edition of the The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Neuropsychiatry, which is currently being prepared. These gifted professionals and inspiring leaders of our field will be the lead editors in subsequent editions of the respective textbooks.
We would like to thank a number of people who made the Sixth Edition of the The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry possible. First, our administrative assistant for this edition, Debra Matsumoto, was invaluable in coordinating all of the correspondence and the myriad interactions required to organize the book. At American Psychiatric Publishing we were fortunate to have as our senior editor Rebecca Richters, who has worked on previous editions and who has edited this volume with her usual skill and aplomb. Also, kudos to graphic design manager Tammy Cordova, who capably orchestrated innumerable details in guiding the book through production; assistant director of production services Judy Castagna, who arranged and coordinated the printing; and production manager Rick Prather, who designed the cover. The managing editor, Greg Kuny, oversaw all aspects of this project. He is a pro and we're privileged to have him in his position. We would like to thank marketing associate Lauren Blackwell, associate director of marketing Christie Couture, and director of marketing and sales Patrick Hansen for their exceptional work in promoting the book and in getting the word out. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to the publisher, Rebecca Rinehart, and the editorial director, John McDuffie, for their unwavering support and encouragement of this edition and for their vision and oversight of the entire publishing enterprise.
