affection: fond or tender love, as between parents and children, brothers and sisters, or friends.

ankle: the joint connecting the foot and the leg.

bench: a long flat wooden seat for several persons.

blush: to become red in the face with shame, confusion, etc.

bog: a deep stretch of soft wet waste land.

cheek: each side of the face below the eyes.

coffin: a wooden box in which a dead person is put for burial.

curate: an assistant priest in charge of a church. degrade: to bring to a shamefully lower state. disagreeable: unfriendly, unpleasant in the company of others. fiddle: a musical instrument with four strings.

fit: a sudden attack of (1) uncontrollable anger, laughter, weeping, etc; (2) illness, especially marked by shaking or stiffening of the body, followed by unconsciousness. forehead: the part of the face above the eyes.

guardian: one who watches over, or is responsible for looking after another (usually young) person; guardianship: the position or duty of a guardian.

gypsy: a member of a dark-skinned wandering race.

haunt: (1) to be about frequently; (2) to visit frequently (especially of a ghost returning).

heather: a low-growing wild bush with purple or white flowers, found on moors and in open spaces.

heir: one who by law receives the possessions of another on the death of the owner.

household: a home and all the people in it, including servants.

humiliate: to lower the pride of, to make ashamed.

ignorant: having no knowledge, lacking education.

landlord: one who owns houses or land which he rents to another.

maid: a woman servant.

mama: mother (as used by her children).

miss: a formal way of addressing, or a title given to a girl or unmarried woman.

mistress: a woman in control of a house or servants. moor: a stretch of wild waste ground, often partly wet.

mortgage: an arrangement in law by which a borrower promises to give a house or land to the lender, if he fails to repay his debt; to mortgage one's property: to promise one's property in this way.

naughty: (of children) disobedient, causing trouble; naughtiness: naughty behaviour.

papa: father (as used by his children).

pony: a small kind of horse.

porridge: a breakfast food made by boiling a kind of grain. shiver: (of the body) to shake uncontrollably with cold, etc.

sofa: a long soft seat with a raised back at one end, for resting on.

stable: a building in which horses are kept.

superior: (1) higher in rank or quality; (2) behaving as if better than others; one's superior: a person above one in rank; superiority: superior condition.

tenant: a person who rents a house or land from its owner. torment: a state of severe suffering of body or mind; to torment: to cause torment to.

upset: disturbed in mind, annoyed, anxious, worried; to upset: to spoil one's peace of mind.

will: a formal written statement by a person concerning what is to be done with his property after his death.
